Needle Shock & Training

Premier Acupuncture talks about training and pre/post workout treatments. Boulder Sports Performance Members read carefully below:

We know by now, as many have personally experienced, that acupuncture can have
amazing results for athletes for injury rehab, performance enhancement, & maximizing recovery. However, there are some important considerations to know prior to receiving an acupuncture treatment at any time, but especially prior to a workout or race.

It is critically important to be:

1. Adequately hydrated,
2. Have eaten a sufficient meal,
3. Not to have taken Performance Stimulants,
4. Inform the Acupuncturist if you are extremely anxious of needles,

If an athlete is dehydrated, under nourished, on stimulants, or overly anxious (afraid) of the needles, they have a much higher chance of having a negative reaction during the treatment. Some people experience a condition called ‘needle shock’ which usually feels like a wave of nausea, dizziness, & in extreme cases can cause a short fainting spell. This only happens on average to a max of 5% of all patients, so it is very rare. When it does happen, the treatment is stopped right away, & the person typically will sit or lay down for a few minutes & recovers fully.

These considerations are meant for everyone receiving acupuncture. However, with the demands being placed on the body by challenging workouts & endurance training, this is even more important.
Acupuncture is totally natural & a dynamic medical tool to help you remain strong, healthy, & vibrant. But as with anything powerful, it should be respected & due care given.
